With this edition of REEF, Darwin is once again highlighting various UK bass styles on two floors, a music policy otherwise rarely found in Berlin. DJ/producer J:Kenzo is co-owner of UK label Artikal Music label, known for his minimalist, dark tribal sound. Uruguayan producer Pablo de Vargas aka Lechuga Zafiro, creates a distinctive soundscape based on field recordings and personal stories, as heard on his album Desde Los Oídos De Un Sapo, released last year. His hand-played beats are polyrhythmic, deliberately breaking with familiar structures. He also aims to reveal the politics behind these rhythms. In his DJ sets, he deconstruct tracks live with individual stems and drum pads. London-based MJK bridges the gap between old-school dubstep and contemporary UK techno, making him a perfect fit for Munich label Ilian Tape. DJ/producer Carré is co-founder of Fast At Work, an underground club night and label with roots in L.A., now based in London. She is known for her subversive sets spanning dubstep, leftfield techno and bass-heavy sounds.
