You can either tighten the reins or loosen them to allow more freedom. With Bella Wakame, it’s definitely the latter. The two musicians are constantly challenging one another, tapping into an entirely new kind of energy — countless different energies, in fact. Rooted in the impulsive, driving interplay between drums/sensory percussion (Andi Haberl) and modular synthesizers (Florian Zimmer), their frenzied and free-flowing results transport listeners into entirely new dimensions — sonic worlds that stand in stark contrast to their other musical projects (The Notwist, Saroos, Driftmachine, etc.).

The music of Y-OTIS is often described as “Liquid Jazz”. For Berlin-based Otis Sandsjö, there are no aesthetic or stylistic boundaries — his music flows in multiple directions and naturally embraces the postmodern spirit of “anything goes”.

When bass and synthesizers dive into the deepest depths of the audible frequency spectrum, when the drums fire off rapid breakbeats, and when the tenor saxophone pierces through the sonic storm with overblown harmonics and split tones, the result feels much closer to a techno-infused rave than a traditional jazz concert.
