Pain, anger and their relief are the themes of this concert evening as part of CTM 2023 - Portals. Ana Fosca takes us through a dark ambient portal with her new release Poised at the Edge of Structure, landing into a bleak fen of floating voices curved around scraped strings and looping cyclonic thickets. Ruhail Qaisar will be supporting his debut release, forthcoming on Aisha Devi’s Danse Noire label, which screams with the trauma and decay of life in his hometown of Leh – a high-altitude plateau located in the contested Ladakh region of Northern India. Funeral Folk is a new album by Maria W Horn and Sara Parkman, exploring »the rituals of grief and the musical phenomenology of death.« Recorded and performed with composer Mats Erlandsson, the album is a sonic guide to rites of loss that sources sacred songs, minimalist spectral music, folk melodies from Ångermanland, and Finnish black metal. Following their triptych De Doden Hebben Het Goed, on which they processed their grief for a deceased friend, Wiegedood’s 2022 album is an uncompromising sonic assault that draws an impressive cathartic intensity from the dark core of black metal: On There is Always Blood at the End of the Road elegiac chord progressions, caustic noise and furious vocals lead through a sheer impenetrable wall of tremolo riffs and blast beats towards a liberating release of energy.
