Claude Debussy symphonies mixed with futuristic hip-hop and electronic beats, rooted in South London's jazz scene. That's the sound of Kamaal Williams' new album Stings, released in late September. The album, following 2018's The Return and 2020's Wu Hen, was recorded in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago in the early months of 2022. The project began during the pandemic, reflecting a time of independence, a time without a label or booking agent in sight. Kamaal Williams – the Peckham, London-born artist of Taiwanese descent – has long bridged worlds, spatially and culturally, geographically and sonically. As the founder of London-based jazz duo Yussef Kamaal, he sparked a new wave of jazz in the UK with their album Black Focus. To celebrate the new release, Williams is coming to Berghain along with Stephanie Yu, a Juilliard School-trained violinist, DJ and composer. She has worked with experimental electronica producers such as King Britt and Ase Manual and played in the touring bands for Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Rihanna and countless other acts.
